1 Kings 1:6 Lessons From David’s Parenting 1. A Lack Of Discipline Will Bring Troubles Later David’s first son, Amnon, raped his half-sister, Tamar, and was then killed by his half-brother, Absalom (2Sa 13:1–33). David’s third son, Absalom, attempted to steal the kingship and kill his father (2Sa 15–18). His fourth son was rebelling and would later be killed by Solomon (2:23–25). Throughout his life, David had trouble with his sons. Despite his record as a good ruler, he failed greatly as a father. He either neglected or refused to teach, guide, and discipline his sons properly. As a result, David’s life was full of grief and sorrow.  Deuteronomy 6:1-9 What is God calling Israel to do:  (1) to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength (vv. 5–6)  (2) to teach their faith diligently to their children (vv. 7–9). 2. The Consequences of Disobedience Will Be Felt For Generations Because David failed to follow God’s will as it related to his family, he experienced one sorrow after another all his life. There is no aspect of discipleship more important than remaining faithful to one’s spouse and children. This involves leading them by instruction and example toward a life of godliness and good character. David followed his desires more than his obedience to God, and he discovered that all that would get him was heartache. › Faithfulness will build generations that will not be shaken; disobedience will tear down generations to come.
