Examples of Biblical Womanhood Found in Mary
• Series: The Real Christmas Story
Mary was more than likely about 14 when this happened. God did the impossible: bring the son of God to earth in a virgin womb to become the Son of David, who rules an eternal kingdom. Examples of Biblical Womanhood Found in Mary Luke 1:26-34 1. A Woman Is The Steward of Life Mary is the highly favored recipient of a special blessing from God. She has experienced God’s undeserved, unmerited grace uniquely. This does not change who Mary is or give her a status beyond other people. It singles her out as a unique instrument God chose to use in his gracious plan of salvation. The grace Mary received was God’s presence with her. The highly favored becomes the greatly troubled. Luke uses Siata-paxthe, the only appearance of the word in the New Testament. It describes something thoroughly stirred up, confused, and perplexed. A divine messenger should be enough to stir up confusion in a young teenager. An angel who promises a unique audience with God is even more confusing. So Mary stirred these thoughts around in her mind, trying to find meaning and the steps to take in light of them. This was an unplanned pregnancy, and she was not happy about it. We All know that we would not be in this world today without the sacrifice of a woman. Women steward all life on this planet. One of the most extraordinary callings as a woman is to give life and bring life. As a wife and a mother, you can take life as quickly as you give it. Luke 1:35-37 2. Women Steward The Power of The Spirit The Holy Spirit would work a miracle within Mary’s body, and the child would be conceived only by a supernatural act of God. As a result, Jesus would be ultimately “holy”; in his case, this meant that he came into the world unstained by sin and free from spiritual corruption. Proverbs 31:25–28 ESV 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: The man is the leader of the home, but the woman is the neck that supports that head, lifts it, and often turns it in the directions it needs to go. Luke 1:38 3. Woman Set The Tone With Servanthood In humble submission; Mary was now ready to serve God and follow his will. As pregnancy had lifted Elizabeth’s disgrace, it would soon bring the virgin Mary disgrace. Both agreed to do what God required. With his mission accomplished, the angel left. “As you have said.” Mary submitted herself entirely to God’s will (i.e., what he desires and plans based on his character and purposes) and trusted his message. She willingly accepted the honor and the criticism that being Jesus’ mother would bring. Young women in the church should follow Mary’s example in sexual purity, love for God, faith in his Word, and a willingness to obey the Holy Spirit, no matter what he asks. You have found throughout history that in the absence of strong men, women will rise up and not let things fall. A strong woman serves those around them and cares for those in need. We need to stop saying that a submissive woman is a weak woman. Mary was a humble servant of the Lord who changed our eternal future through her submission to the plan of God. What are our transformational moments? Are you walking in the role God has called you to? Are you being sensitive to the Spirit? Are you a servant in the way the Lord needs you to be?
