When Marriage is Dictated by Culture
• Series: Misc 2025
Mother's Day by Krystal Barham I. Marriage is under attack today like never before. II. All these ideologies feed selfishness. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Phil. 2:3-4 “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” 1 Cor. 10:24 III. My interests and concerns should only be consumed with SELFLESSNESS “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34 Matthew 5:38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for an eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.” Colossians 3:15 “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” IV. God Created us to be GIVING/SELFLESS Proverbs 27: 15-16 “A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping the oil with the hand.” Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such things there is no law.” Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double- edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing should and spirit, joints, marrow; it judges thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” I Tim 3:16-17 “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” V. My issues “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23 VI. We must put our spouse before ourselves at ALL times WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US? Who is the most important person in your marriage? Are you putting your spouses needs/wants above your own? Do you need to ask your spouse for forgiveness?
