LOVE || PART 5 Love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (ESV) Love does NOT... 1. Envy Love “does not envy.” “Covetousness wants what the other guy has; envy is angry that the other guy has it.” “There is jealousy and strife among” the Corinthians (3:3), but love rejoices with those who rejoice and weeps with those who weep. Jealousy and envy begin when admiration and desire turn to resentment of others for what they have. They are the attitudinal roots of many terrible actions in the world. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 2. Boast Love does not “boast,” which means “to heap praise on oneself, behave as a … ‘braggart, windbag.’ ” Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Romans 12:9 3. Arrogant Love is not “arrogant,” which means “to cause to have an exaggerated self-conception, puff up, make proud.” To be proud is to be overly self-confident or insubordinate to God and others. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments condemn pride as the source of much destruction and pain in the world. When one cares about other people, he does not find himself full of self-importance or arrogance toward others. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Romans 12:16 4. Rude When one does not concern himself with the likes and dislikes of others, he shows a disrespect for them. Proper regard, on the other hand, indicates love for other people. Nevertheless, love does not always require a person to go along with the crowd.  For instance, every loving Christian bears the responsibility to break the customs that perpetuate discrimination. Love is not “rude,” or indecent. It outdoes others in showing honor. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Romans12:10 What does this mean for us? Is it time for us to cheer on our fellow Christian? Do we need to stay humble and hungry? Are you showing honor?
