God’s Power Revealed In Habakkuk’s Prayer
• Series: The Struggle Is Real
The answer God gave Habakkuk in chapter 2 satisfied the prophet. He began to realize that the wicked of every age make choices that guarantee their downfall—and misery. Whatever heights the wicked reach, the evil person can never be satisfied. And the course he takes in its pursuit will trip him up: the enemies he inevitably makes will treat him as he has treated them. God’s Power Revealed In Habakkuk’s Prayer Habakkuk 3:1-2 1. God Reveals His Presence and Mercy The prophet knew of God’s great power and had heard accounts of God’s miraculous actions on behalf of his people in the past. He longed to see such things again. But because of wickedness and rebellion, the people had not experienced God’s presence powerfully for quite some time. In fact, they had offended God so significantly that the only display of power they were bound to see soon would come in the form of his judgment. Therefore, Habakkuk made two requests. 1.He prayed that God would come again and reveal his presence among his people with a fresh display of power. He knew that God’s people would not survive if the Lord did not intervene or step in with his generous grace—his undeserved favor—and the power of his Spirit. Only then could they experience true spiritual life. 2.Habakkuk prayed that during the coming times of distress, God would be merciful to his people because they would not survive without his mercy. We, too, need a continual supply of God’s grace and mercy. As the church’s foundation is being shaken today, and trouble and opposition seem everywhere, we need to pray earnestly for a renewed sense of God’s presence and power. Nothing else will bring spiritual revival and renewal to God’s people. The best church growth model is through the power and presence of God! If we press into the presence of God in our services, we won’t be able to build a building big enough to house it. Habakkuk 3:3a 2. God’s Promises Remain As God came down to His people at Sinai to establish His covenant with them, He would come to liberate His people and reaffirm His covenant with them. Habakkuk wrote of God’s earlier visitation at Sinai: God came from Teman, the Holy One. Teman was a desert oasis in Edom, but it might also represent the entire region south of the Dead Sea. “Seir,” used by Moses, was a poetic name for the mountainous region called Teman. It may be of some significance that God’s appearance to Moses was in the region south of Judah while the Babylonians invaded from the north. Furthermore, God performed many wonders in this area to the south as He led His people into the Promised Land from Egypt. We have to know that if we get back to what God founded this nation on, then his hand will be on us again. The same is true in our lives. No matter how far we run from God, we can still return to his promises. God is always faithful, even when our faithfulness wanes. Habakkuk 3:3b-7 3. God Can Shake Our Nation At Sinai, God had come like an incredible thunderstorm sweeping down from the mountainous region in the south. As His glory covered the heavens, the sun, and the moon appeared pale in comparison. God’s shimmering glory not only filled the heavens, but His praise filled the earth. The prophet indicated a progressive quality to God’s appearance by comparing His splendor to a sunrise. The heavens are first tinted with early rays of the hidden sun. The earth is illuminated as the ball of fire appears over the horizon, and finally, everything is flooded with brilliant, glorious light. Just as rays of light streak across the morning sky, so rays flashed from God’s hand. God’s radiance is both emanating and concealing. It reveals His glory but veils His power. It is easy to forget that the light and warmth that shower the earth with blessing come from a ball of fire that could consume the globe in a moment. So, God’s power is hidden in His glory. Habakkuk’s vision of God coming from the distance and marching across the land rose to a climax. Having reached where He would execute judgment, God stopped, stood, and shook the earth. We see in these examples of God shaking his people with His glory. I think that is what God is setting us up for to shake us with his presence. We are due for another great revival.
