God Will Reveal His Mighty Hand To Us
• Series: The Struggle Is Real
In these verses, Habakkuk refers to the time when God miraculously liberated his people from slavery in Egypt. The same God who brought freedom and salvation in the past would come again in all his glory. All waiting and looking forward to that coming would experience true life. Someday, all who have placed their complete trust and hope in God will witness his triumph over all empires and all nations. God will bring his judgment down, destroy evil, and save his people. He uses the story of Exodus to illustrate how he will defeat evil in the future. God Will Reveal His Mighty Hand To Us Habakkuk 3:8-11 1. In History The Lord who does not change is sovereign over history, not only in the past but also in the present and future, as he works for his glory and the redemption of his people. The long day of Joshua, another time when the Lord’s enemies were judged, is probably the background for the reference to the sun and the moon standing still in the heavens (Josh 10:12–13). The prophet Habakkuk saw the work of God in the past and knew that God would also work in the future. Our faithful God, who does not change, is a subject preached throughout the Old Testament. Habakkuk 3:12-15 2. The Nations Rather than ignoring wrongdoing (1:2–4) or allowing oppression of his people to go unpunished (1:12–17), God remembers his covenant and acts on their behalf. The purpose of the psalm and God’s theophany is to indicate the continued presence of gracious care coupled with divine judgment. Here we have God’s answer to Habakkuk’s complaints (1:12–17)—his people will be saved. God refuses to stand above the fray and watch human injustice run amok. God crosses time and space to enter into the sinful messiness of human existence to save those most victimized by the world’s ways. Why did Habakkuk see the vision of the Lord’s majesty? It foreshadowed the redemption of God’s people. The purpose of the theophany is to assure that God would crush the head of the wicked and deliver his people. Then, In The Future, God Will 1. Defeat Evil We know that in the end times, God will defeat all evil and establish his kingdom on this earth. The evil that we see in our world today will not be forever. Soon, God will come and defeat satan and send him back to Hell where he belongs. 2. Bring Justice To All We serve a just God, and he will bring justice to all the evil in our world. One day, God will judge the righteous and the unrighteous. Those who did not live for God will be sent to the lake of fire, and those who lived for God will have to give an account of what they did with God’s grace. One day, what will you tell God that you did with the grace he so freely offered you? 3. Rescue The Oppressed As God rescued the Israelites of old, God will rescue us. All of this mess you are living in will one day be lifted off of you. Aren’t you glad that one day, you will not have to go through the drama of an election cycle? Aren’t you glad you will not have to go to work one day? Aren’t you glad that one day you can eat food without worrying about being fat? (That one may not be theologically correct, but I am standing on that) God is coming to save the redeemed and take us to a place without suffering and pain! What are our transformational moments? What evil do you need God to defeat today? What account will you give God for the grace he has offered you? Are you ready for God to come and rescue you?
