Steps For His Presence To Fall
Not Published • Series: Exodus
Many of us want the Spirit of God to fall on us, but we are unwilling to do the work necessary for Him to fall. Steps For His Presence To Fall Ex 19:5-6 1. To Be A Treasured Possession, You Must Obey His Voice If you obey me fully. Israel’s place as God’s chosen people depended on their obedience to him as their Lord. That is why this verse (and many other places in God’s covenant) begins with the word “if” and is followed by the word “then.” My treasured possession. Israel was to be God’s special treasure (cf. Dt 4:10; Am 3:2; 9:7). God values all people. All nations are accountable to him as their Creator, but Israel had a unique relationship with God because of the way he had rescued them and revealed Himself to them. God values us, but to truly be his treasured possession, he expects our everything. We want to do the minimum and expect God's maximum. Ex 19:9 2. God Wants To Speak To His People The “you” in this verse is singular, but the event of the advent or coming of God in a dense, dark cloud was public. Ordinarily, God dwelt with his people in a pillar of cloud and fire, but here it turned dense and pitch black, perhaps with a roar of thunder and the flash of lightning as God’s voice pierced his creation. The voice of God speaking to Moses (cf. Deut 4:32–33) would be audible in the camp so that Israel and all her true descendants would trust in Moses’ words both then and for all time. Would you believe me if I told you that God wants this to be a daily occurrence? He wants to speak to you every day. The problem is that you do not have the time to speak to him. Your schedule is so busy that even if God called your assistant, he couldn’t get an appointment. God wants to fill this sanctuary with 15the cloud of His presence every Sunday, but the issue is that it would not fit our schedule or comfort level to allow him to do that. Ex 19:10-15 3. Put To Death What Separates You From God As a token of their inward preparation for meeting with God on the third day, the people were to wash their clothes, stay off the mountain, and abstain from sexual relations with their mates. The theology of this passage, then, is fitness for meeting with God and preparation for the worship of God. What is required to approach the God of gods, King of kings, and Lord of lords is both decorum and a holistic sanctification of our bodies as well as our inner persons. This is not to say that there was intrinsic virtue in the mere act of washing clothes or abstaining from marital relations, but the outward act was to signal that the inner work of sanctification had also been sought. We are spoiled New Testament believers who will not do the bare minimum for his presence. What are our transformational moments? Are you willing to do what it takes to be His treasured possession? Do you want God’s presence to fall? Are you willing to lay at the altar what separates you from God?
